Common Types of Relationship DNA Testing

There are several DNA tests that can determine various levels of kinship.  Here are the most common ones that individuals search for:

Paternity Test - establishes genetic proof as to whether a man is the biological father of a child.   Establishing paternity is important to ensure a child’s well being and to fully protect his or her rights. Definitively knowing one’s biological parentage is important for several reasons:

It allows access to legal and social benefits, including social security, veteran’s, and inheritance benefits.  It provides an accurate medical history for the child, giving the healthcare provider additional insight during diagnosis and in managing the child’s health.
It strengthens the bond between father and child.

Maternity Test - establishes whether a woman is the biological mother of a child.  Maternity test results may be used in the following circumstances:
  • To confirm that an adoptee has been reunited with his/her birth mother
  • To prove biological relationships in an immigration case.
  • To confirm that an embryo conceived through in vitro fertilization was implanted into the correct mother
  • To resolve situations in which mothers or hospital staff suspect that a baby mix-up has occurred in the nursery
Twin Zygosity Test - is a DNA test that assists in determining if two siblings are identical or fraternal twins. The genetic profiles or DNA coding for identical twins are exactly the same; fraternal twins have completely different DNA profiles.

Siblingship Test - is conducted to determine if two or more children share one or both parents. The results of this test determines whether they are half or full siblings. A siblingship DNA test is an indirect way to determine family relationships when an alleged father is not available for a paternity test. Results of a siblingship test may be used as proof in Social Security benefits and other inheritance claims.

Grandparentage Test - is a DNA test performed in the absence of an alleged father, determines the relationship between a child and the parents of the alleged father.  It is an indirect way to determine family relationships when an alleged father is not available for a paternity test. Grandparentage test results may be used as proof in Social Security benefits and other inheritance claims as well as in some immigration cases.

Genealogy or Family/Ancestry Reconstruction Test - is growing in popularity as people in our hectic and hurried lives are understanding the importance of knowing where they came from, who their ancestors were, what legends or history is in the family and an overall sense of connection with the past.  While it can’t provide you with your entire family tree or tell you who your ancestors are, DNA testing can:
  • Determine if two people are related
  • Determine if two people descend from the same ancestor
  • Find out if you are related to others with the same surname
  • Prove or disprove your family tree research
  • Provide clues about your ethnic origin
